Lessons from the Hammock
Lessons from the Hammock
by Pastor Jess

Welcome to "Lessons From the Hammock". I am Jess Engle and I am a pastor of Aurora Mennonite Church in Aurora, Ohio. Prior to pastoring, I taught elementary school in Oklahoma and Virginia for eleven years. I am married with three school age daughters. Basically, I am a pretty regular guy. My family obtained a large white hammock that fit perfectly between two trees in our back yard. As I did some devotional reading/praying in the hammock, the Holy Spirit stirred in me several parallels between spiritual life and this hammock. As I began sharing these with different people (being the extrovert I am), one family friend (thanks, Paula) said, "Why don't you post this on your church website?" So here we are. Beginning today, we (thanks, Karen) will post weekly ideas/reflections "from the hammock".

Thanks for joining me.

May 7, 2007:

I had been ill and 'under -the-weather' the other week. Because of that I hadn't gotten out and hiked "in my boots" for awhile. I still didn't feel 100%, but I needed to do something -- I needed to exercise. I was concerned though, that if I went on a long hike I might use up all my energy in that and then be tired all day.
Instead of worrying, I decided God was leading me to "get out". As I began the hike, I realized how refreshing and energizing it was to get out in nature. As I continued the walk the realization God gave me was that in my viewpoint, I only considered a walk as an energy drain -- instead of thinking that God might use this to re-energize me! Friends, how often have we not done something God was leading us to do because were afraid of the energy drain? Maybe God wanted to re-energize us?
Friends, obey the voice of our all-knowing heavenly Father. He does know what we need! He does have our best in mind!

April 30, 2007:

"If you read it, the will come. If you read it, they will come." I believe when we read the Bible with an open heart to God's voice, we get answers to our life's questions and concerns. I believe when we seek the scriptures for God's loving direction He does guide and reveal. Do you desire consistent wisdom, discernment, love, healing, and hope in your life? If you read it, they will come.

April 23, 2007:

Reading, thinking about, and believing the Word of God through the Bible is a powerful way to grow as a Christian. Just this week I spent a couple of hours with a young man from the community who is considering a deeper call to ministry. One of the things I emphasized to this Brother was spending time absorbing God speaking in the Bible. God will give him (and us) wisdom, direction, and timing as we seek Him in His word!
I concluded last Sunday's service with these powerful words of God (Isaiah 43:1-3, 4-6). Receive them again.

But now the LORD who created you says, "Don't be afraid, for I have ransomed you; I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown! When you walk through the fire of oppression, the flames will not consume you. For I am the LORD your God, you Savior. You are precious to me and I love you."

April 16, 2007:

As part of our vacation during spring break last week, our family stayed with some friends for a couple of days in inner-city Harrisburg, PA. A couple of mornings, my daughter and I went walking around the neighborhood to get some exercise. Of course, I had to wear my boots.J 'Me and my boots' took me to the city!
As we hiked , I had some reflections about life -- Here are some of them:

1) Walk with a purpose.

2) Don't be distracted by stupid talk, people appearing tough, or the overwhelming need.

3) Look for relationship -- where God is at work -- not just where you think you 'should'.

4) Love people -- but also care for yourself. You can't love fully if you are burned out.

May you know God's love and wisdom as you continue on in your faith walk!

April 9, 2007:

For my sabbatical (May 14-August 6) I have come up with a journal/book title to record and reflect on my experiences. It is called, "Me and my boots". The idea began first with God providing Pastor Naomi and me this wonderful opportunity to have this sabbatical through AMC's commitment to care for their pastors. (Thank you, Aurora Mennonite Church!)

Secondly, an opportunity arose during the sabbatical time to go backpacking in Oregon with my brother. After a little while, I purchased some hiking boots and already have had several experiences that contain practical application to our faith walks with Jesus.

Last week on Friday, I lead a prayer walk while carrying the cross. I was wearing 'my boots' as I walked around the church in 10 inches of snow! As I walked with the cross, I spent time in confession, prayer for AMC, and for our community. I believe God is powerfully and very relevantly at work with us. Do you see it?

April 2, 2007:

As I sit quietly this morning two phrases from different songs come to my mind. The first one is "the overflow of a forgiven soul. . . " and the other is "Oh happy day, Oh happy day, when Jesus washed my sins away."

Do you know the deep happiness and overflow of joy that comes from knowing and experiencing forgiveness? You can!

I John 1:9 says if we name and confess our sins to Jesus -- He does forgive us! God can be depended upon to forgive us of anything! Try saying this prayer, "Jesus, Son of God, Savior. Have mercy on me a sinner. Forgive me."

Now comes the harder part -- embracing this free gift of forgiveness, hope, and new life. You are free. God has forgiven you. He wants you to be happy and joyful. Live as a person who's life has been rescued. Join those who sing and dance from an overflow of joy and happiness and gratitude. This is what Easter is about!

March 26, 2007:

My week started off a little crazy. My sister left town early in the morning. I helped my girls get ready for their days at school and I spent some time scrambling to assist Naomi in preparing for a workshop. Meanwhile the dish pile in the kitchen only increases. (Besides, I had work I needed to get started on) -- whew!

As I made my way into the kitchen and the 'mountain' of dishes, I decided I was not going to be paralyzed by this task. (I have at different times been so totally overwhelmed by a task like this that I just didn't do anything!) I equated this job with my faith walk of following Jesus.

I can make one step at a time.

I can do one day at a time.

I can wash one dish at a time.

Soon, I was half done. Eventually I finished. Boy did it feel good to move that mountain! Friends, don't stop moving when you feel overwhelmed. Jesus is with you!

March 19, 2007:

I still love my new hiking boots. I continue to get them "broken in". They are far more comfortable now that my feet are getting used to them. Guess what I am worried about now?

I am worried that they will wear out before I get to use them on the backpacking trip! Imagine that -- after I work through the process of letting my new boots get 'dirty' -- now I am concerned they will wear out prematurely!

As I was outside this week, I heard the birds chirping and talking. I heard them saying, "Abba loves us. Abba loves you. He will take care of you -- providing for you. Don't worry. Don't worry. " (See Matthew 6:26-34)

God is telling me to quit worrying about my boots wearing out. He is telling us as a ch22urch to trust Him, follow Jesus, and draw comfort and counsel from the Holy Spirit! God loves us.

February 5, 2007:

As a young student, George Washington Carver prayed, "Lord, show me the secret of the universe." Carver felt God answer, "George, that is too large for you. Unlock the resources and secrets of the peanut -- that is more your size. (Augsburger, '35)

Friend, what is your 'peanut'? Where is the area God is asking you to pay attention to? How are you working 'with God'? Are you embracing God's deep love as you wrestle with making major adjustments?

February 12, 2007:

Peace is a tremendous gift. Whether it is 'peace of mind', harmony in the family, hope in difficult circumstances, or a period of mutual concord between nations.

I like how Jesus says in John 14:27, "I am leaving you with a gift -- peace of mind and heart! And the peace I give isn't fragile like the peace the world gives. So, don't be troubled or afraid."

One way we know God loves us is that out of a love relationship with Him, He gives us peace. This peace is a gift. Receive it from our loving Father, and embrace that through Him, we do no have to be afraid.

February 19, 2007:

God continually invites us into a deeper relationship with Him. As our Creator, God knows what truly fulfills us -- thus His emphasis upon relationship!

God also knows that for healthy relationship to occur there cannot be coercion and 'forcing'. Thus God always invites and offers -- even if bad choices are made.

In Luke 18:18-24, Jesus has an encounter with a Jewish leader who wanted to know how to get to heaven. Jesus knew he was a "good guy", but lacked a willingness to truly follow God with everything. This guy did all the 'right things' -- except developing a deep love relationship with God. So when Jesus challenged him to make major adjustments in his life, he couldn't -- he didn't have a deep relationship with God.

Nurture your relationship with God. God will tenderly guide you through storms, waiting, adjustments, etc. You can trust Him when He says, "Come, follow me."

JANUARY 2, 2007:

Many of us responded to last Sunday's invitation to let go of certain things from 2006. We then picked up a scripture card that had a paraphrase of Matthew 11:28-38 on it. It read, "Jesus says, Come to me, all who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest and help. Take my yoke, let me teach you for I am gentle and humble. I love you."

Friends, use these powerful words of Jesus to help you in 2007. When struggles, worries, and temptations come -- say these words of Jesus. They will help you!

JANUARY 8, 2007:

Notice the special notebook in the fellowship hall. This is for us as a church (both adults and children) to recall and record ways God has done some miraculous things for us in 2007. As a church we are proclaiming that 2007 is "The year of the LORD". As you experience God more deeply this year and see Him at work -- take time to record it in our 'miracle' notebook.

I like how Jesus speaks to the man who had a legion of demons cast our of him. He says, "Go back to your family. Tell them what a wonderful thing God has done for you." Luke 8:30 then continues, "So he went all through the city telling everyone about Jesus' mighty miracle."

Let's tell each other about God's miracles!

JANUARY 15, 2007:

Last Sunday, as we began the "Experiencing God" series here at AMC, we heard several persons share about how they experienced God through His different names.

"Savior, Comforter, Immanuel (God with us), Wisdom-giver, Father, Rescuer, Blessing Giver, Beginning (Abba) and End (Omega), and Prayer Answerer, were all excellent examples of names of God that had special significance.

Friends -- these are great testimonies of God at work! Friends -- these are stories the people around us need to hear! Friends -- do not be afraid to reach out to others with this Good News!

JANUARY 22, 2007:

This week I spent time at Bluffton University and Streetsboro High School. At both places, God challenged me to see where He was working. Now, God knows I cannot see where He is at work unless He lets me know. And God can't let me know unless I pay attention to and build my love relationship with Him! (Friends, do you see the pattern?)

In both of these settings, God led me to share with these precious young people that they are valuable and that they matter to Him. God also had me share ideas from Jeremiah 29:11 (This word is for you as well!) "For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD. They are plans for your good, plans to give you hope and a future."

JANUARY 29, 2007:

Just because we do not see how or where God is working does not mean it is not happening! Psalm 139:8 says, "If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the depths, you are there." Verse 9 continues, "If I ride in the morning winds to the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, your strength will support me."

I experienced God being with me in some different settings this past week. In one of these, I rode in the back of a school bus full of Streetsboro High School students. I was struck by the reality that God was there. Jesus was present -- interested in relationship with me and these young people!

Friends, even in the darkest place, God's light, love, and desire for relationship cannot be hidden! Look for Jesus. Imagine by faith where He is with you in your everyday life!

December 25, 2006:

I like Psalm 37. Verse 4 reads, "Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart." Verse 7 says, "Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him." These verses reminded me of a chorus that goes something like this, "O wait on the LORD, wait patiently for Him. For He will give you your heart's desire."

God is not in the hurry or rush that we so often are. He does not worry over the many details we trip ourselves on. Our Father in Heaven knows the purposes and plans He has -- and will accomplish them -- in His timetable!

Our call is to delight ourselves in God. It is to nurture our love relationship with Him. As we do that, we will be able to wait. We will be able to see God's goodness and faithfulness. We will have our heart's desires met.

December 18, 2006:

I am excited about the preaching series we will be experiencing together from January 14 through March. Pastor Naomi and I will be using Henry Blackaby's book, "Experiencing God" to help guide us. This book is very relevant with many practical helps in deepening our personal relationship with God.

I encourage you to purchase a book or workbook either this week (to get better rates) or at a later time. The special group rates are $10 for the book and $18 for the workbook. There is also a devotional and journal for $14.

I believe you will find this book a tremendous source in growing as a Christian. I believe you will experience God more deeply through this study. Join us!

December 11, 2006:

When talking with people, I have often asked the question, "What are you looking for?" From years of teaching and pastoring, I am learning that if people (of any age) are looking to make trouble, to criticize, or to seek just having their own needs met -- then that is what will happen.

I have also learned that if people are looking for peace, purpose, and God's way -- that will happen as well!

What are you looking for?

Now look for the light.

Now look for the freedom.

Now look for the love.

Now look for Jesus!

December 4, 2006:

This week Wednesday, I spoke to a group of elementary-aged children at New Covenant Christian School outside of Cleveland. It was energizing to interact with them about what things they value and treasure. I concluded the message by emphasizing that Jesus values and treasures them.

Friends, as we attend to holiday responsibilities, family relationships, and memories of the past -- remember Jesus treasures you. He loves you and has no desire fro you to think that He has abandoned you. Walk closely with Jesus this holiday season.

Put yourself in places to hear His voice. Read the scriptures. Do some prayer walking. Attend church fellowship with healthy brothers and sisters.

November 27, 2006:

Naomi, girls, and I enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday with family in the West Virginia - Virginia areas last week. As part of the weekend, we also attended church on Sunday with several family members.

God spoke to me through the preacher's using of Luke 10:38-42. As she read the scriptural passage, the pastor invited the congregation to consider "where you are in the story." As the verses were read I sensed God saying, "Jess, be like the disciples here -- continue on the way. Don't be worried about all the details. See how Jesus handled Martha with all her worries and concerns?"

Friends, continue on the way with Jesus. Experience Jesus' help in real and relevant ways. Keep your relationship with Jesus a priority!

November 20, 2006:

What a joy it is to hear truthful testimony of how God is at work! In the past weeks here at AMC, Jamie, Kathy, Jeremy, Jim, Bev and others have spoken clearly of how God has been at work in real and relevant ways in their lives. And this morning we hear from our worship in song leader, Curtis Marazzi. Isn't it great?

AMC, I am thankful for you! You are taking seriously Jesus' call to come and follow Him. You are recognizing and embracing that God loves, values, and treasures you. You are inviting the pouring of God's Spirit into the deep recesses of your heart. I love you.

November 13, 2006:

Isn't it fun to watch a 'little guy' learn to walk? One week they are barely standing and the next they are taking tiny wobbly steps. Then about 2-3 weeks later, they are pattering all over the room! It is energizing to see growth and improvement in a little one. In fact, we love to call out encouragement and see how that excites the little one -- don't we?

Friends, let's be encouragers of 'walkers' this week. Let's cheer on those who are walking with or learning to walk with Jesus. Let us smile, bless, love and encourage!

November 6, 2006:

Last Sunday Jim Kuchta opened the worship service by sharing how he experienced God's love more deeply in the past week. Jim's experience included a powerful God making room for him on His lap. Here Jim experienced the love of Father God -- even as he could hear various negative voices around him. What a great word!

Our relationship to God is the single most important aspect of our lives. If it is not right -- everything else will be affected.

Friends, guard your love relationship with God. See how following Jesus enhances every part of your life!

October 30, 2006:

How have you experienced God more deeply this week? Have you noticed an increased 'burden' for those around you?

I have. As I waited at the orthodontist's office while Marie was having her braces removed, instead of closing myself off to others, I found myself praying silently for those around me. I prayed for the mother of three kids on my right, the talkative single lady chatting with an older woman across the room, and the different office staff walking in and out. After a time, Marie's orthodontist came out and visited a while. Our conversation began with him asking what I was writing about and then continued to at some point naming that God is a personal God who does speak with us.

How is God leading you to share your faith?

October 23, 2006:

As I sit in my "hammock space" -- (the special place I go to meet with my LORD), I am thinking about some truths about God. Do I really believe that God is always at work? Or do I believe that God just created the world and is now sitting passively by letting the earth run itself?

If I focus on the conflict in Iraq, the immense needs in our community, or all the ways I think I am failing -- I begin to believe God doesn't really care.

But when I still myself and let Jesus lead, I know that God is working to redeem this lost world. He is pursuing a love relationship with me and others. And God invites me to join Him in that work. The Creator of Heaven and Earth is inviting you to join Him in this work! Wow -- What an opportunity!

October 16, 2006:

As my 40th birthday draws close (October 23), I was asked if I had any special reflections or thoughts. After thinking out loud for a awhile, I said I am learning to worry less and wait more. I am growing in truly trusting an all-powerful and all-loving God, who personally pursues each person. I am improving at not just trying to "make things happen".

I am looking forward to the 'second forty' and all I can learn about our Great God. How about you? What is God calling your attention to? How are you responding?

October 9, 2006:

I am visiting a man in the community this week. After awhile the conversation shifted and the Holy Spirit nudged me to share I John 1:9 with him. It reads, "If we confess our sins to God, He can be depended upon to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong."

At first I thought I'd just let him think about it for awhile, then it dawned on me -- he needed forgiveness today. After praying "Lord, forgive me. I need your help!" I said to the man, "You are forgiven. God has forgiven you."

Oh the joy, of being forgiven by Almighty God! And when we know He has forgiven us -- it makes it easier to forgive ourselves, doesn't it?

October 2, 2006:

In my personal study, I have been reading and meditating on Henry Blackaby's book, "Experiencing God". This week I read that many times God calls us to follow Him without giving all the details up front. That's hard, isn't it? We like to have stuff figured out before we step out.

In Mark 1:17, Jesus calls out to Simon and Andrew, "Come, follow me! I will make you fishers of men!" That's it. The Bible doesn't give us more details except that they followed.

Can you let Jesus be your 'way' today and this week? Will you trust God daily -- nurturing your everyday love relationship with Him, knowing that He will spell out the details as you follow?

September 25, 2006:

In Mark 9:33-37, as the disciples were traveling through Galilee -- they had an argument about who was the greatest. When Jesus asked them about it -- they didn't say anything (likely they were too embarrassed). Have you ever experienced anything like this? Has Jesus ever confronted you about times you thought what you were thinking and doing was the most important thing on earth?

Jesus has humbled me like this on many occasions. He showed me that He was the greatest -- because of how He made a way for salvation for all people through His death and resurrection.

In this passage, Jesus goes on to say that if we want to be great or important, we must be servants. And as an example to show this, He took a child in his arms and said, "Welcome these!"

September 18, 2006:

The Lord lovingly gives us choices. We can give up or we can take courage and walk out to face the future because He's not finished with us yet.

If we choose to go on -- Jesus promises to be with us, never abandoning or forsaking us. He doesn't promise that there will never be more storms, setbacks, or pain. You know what else Jesus offers? Jesus extends peace to us, because He has overcome the power of the world through His death and resurrection. Jesus offers peace -- peace with God, peace within ourselves (and who we are), peace with others, and peace with waiting through storms.

Take heart, Friends, that following and obeying Jesus, reading God's Word, spending time in prayer, and relating in small groups is not a waste of time! It is a wonderful investment for yourself, your family and God's kingdom!

September 11, 2006:

Last Sunday in the message about suffering, I noted that we can express ourselves when we are in pain and hardship. God can handle our questions, anger, and pain.

I also named that suffering is not always because of sin. Just because we suffer, does not mean we have failed God in some fashion!

Friend, how are you doing with your own pain and suffering? Are you finding ways to express yourself to God? Are you putting yourself in places where you can get support and love from God and people? Can you hear our LORD say "I love you. You are going to make it, I am with you."?

September 4, 2006:

Last Sunday several fears were named. Fear of failure, fear of the unknown, fear of rejection, and fear with finances were some named. We talked about leaving these fears at the foot of the cross -- because Jesus has more power than them.

How are you doing with them? Have you picked your fears back up or are you leaving them at the cross?

Receive this word from Isaiah 41:10, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed for I am your God, I will strengthen you and help you, I will uphold you with my right hand."

August 28, 2006:

I am excited about the four small groups starting this coming Wednesday! (We appreciate the existing groups as well!) We have some good leaders stepping out in their faith. I am looking forward to seeing how the Lord provides wisdom, discernment, creativity, and love!

Do you need a place to rest or laugh? Do you want a place to be known and accepted? Are you desiring a place where you can "stick together" with some fellow believers -- as you strive to follow Jesus? Come to a small group -- learn or continue to learn how to hear God's voice.

August 21, 2006:

This week I had to give up 'my way' for God's way several times. I didn't like it -- at the time. As things worked out, I began to see the wisdom and purpose of God's hand. Has that ever happened to you? Have you ever been nudged by the LORD to do something (when initially you didn't want to) and later see how good everything worked out?

We are restarting our small groups ministries for the year. There are several very interesting groups that can help you grow spiritually and in relationship with each other. Perhaps you don't like small groups or feel uncomfortable 'being real' with others. Is God asking you to give up your way for His way -- by participating in our small group ministry? Do you believe God can bless you in ways you can't even think about right now?

August 14, 2006:

It feels good to be a part of a church where we can 'be real' and relevant. We don't have to say and do everything 'perfectly'. It's good to be able to work together with a group of people that allow you to improve and grow in the way we live and in how we use different gifts and abilities.

Last Sunday, we had the opportunity to fill out and turn in a sheet that listed ministry involvements and interests. If you didn't get one or haven't filled yours out yet -- make sure you do! Turn those in to either of the pastors or Amy Nussbaum. I am looking forward to working together to grow. God's church -- finding ways for us to experiment and use God-given talents and interests.

August 7, 2006:

Have you ever woken up in the morning generally irritated at anything or everything? Are you familiar with the phrase, "waking up on the wrong side of the bed"?

Well, the other morning, I woke up feeling like this. Instead of berating everyone in my house (including myself), I disciplined myself to continue my pattern of reading the Bible. As I settled my emotions and sat with Jesus, I was able to hear Jesus ask me, "What are you thankful for?" As I began naming the many things I am thankful for, the Spirit of God encouraged me and my mood changed.

What Jesus says in John 16:33 stands. "In this world you will have trouble -- but take heart! I have overcome them."

July 31, 2006:

As I write this, I have just returned from helping to chaperone almost 100 teen-agers at Streetsboro High School Marching Bank Camp. What a learning experience!

Like Jesus (in John 4, with the "Samaritan woman"), I did not avoid this community of people. I was able to both give and receive. I cared, connected, and conversed with this community. Some really positive interactions and relationships happened. I look forward to how many will come to know Jesus as Savior in the months and years to come. It felt good to sow some good seeds in this field.

Friends, how are you going into the community? Are you relying on self or the Holy Spirit in you? Are you letting the love of Jesus stir in you as you speak and show love to the community?

July 24, 2006:

Last Sunday, we read how the royal official "took Jesus at his word" (John 4:50). The man put himself in a place to hear Jesus say, "you may go. Your son will live." It is important for us to hear, believe, and do what Jesus says.

How can we 'take Jesus at his word' if we are not putting ourselves in a place where we can hear Jesus? How can we believe and do what Jesus says if we do not take time to hear his voice?

Friend, where can you hear Jesus this week? Take a walk, quiet your mind, turn off the television, read some Psalms or the book of John in the Bible, pray for your family and church -- asking God for protection and healing, call a friend with an encouraging word -- all these are ideas.

July 17, 2006:

I have this certain route I drive to Camp Luz (in Kidron, OH). It is a good route to take. I can relax, enjoy the scenery and know that I will make good time --(whether I am taking Anna to work, dropping Marie and a friend off for camp, or just going there myself).

But this week my usual route was blocked by a closed road and I couldn't go that way -- I needed to find a different way. (And many of you know there are several ways to go to Camp Luz.) Guess what? The different way I went actually was quicker and better!

This kind of thing happens a lot with God. We get used to God working in a certain way. But God wants to remind us that His ways are above our ways and that His thoughts are beyond our own (Isaiah 55:89). God wants us to not just lean on our own understanding --but to trust Him (Proverbs 3:5-6). God is great and good -- He loves and treasures us. He is a personal God who walks with us in the journey of life -- trust Him.

July 10, 2006:

As I listened to last Sunday's worship service on tape, I was moved with how God used you! I appreciated the scriptures and sharing by our elders. I enjoyed hearing the words of testimony and prayers from Dave and others. Thank you, Church! And I was moved again as I heard the DVD of Father's love.

This theme of God the Father's love struck me this week as well. One morning during our vacation, I sat on the beach watching wave after wave come and crash on the sand. (Have you ever been to an ocean beach?) The waves kept coming and coming. I was reminded that the ocean's waves are like the Father's love -- it just keeps coming and coming. God's love for us and all of humanity never tires, stops or shuts down!

Praise God!

July 3, 2006:

As a child, did you ever get sick of your parents telling you the same thing over and over? As a parent or grandparent, do you ever tire of repeating yourself to your children or grandchildren?

In Psalm 136, the writer repeats the phrase, "His love endures forever" 26 times! Why? Because it is an important truth!

Our Father in Heaven wants us to experience peace and God's love endures forever. God's love endured through creation, through Israel's slavery in Egypt and through desert wanderings. AMC, God the Father's love continues to endure in our lives -- through things that enslave us and as we follow Him to our place of deliverance.

God's love endures forever. May you know the Father's love more deeply.

June 26, 2006:

Psalm 131:2 reads, "But I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me." With our child dedication for Clayton, Tyler, Kandice, and Dicoda last Sunday, I was reminded of the peace and comfort children in loving homes get.

Our Father in Heaven wants us to experience peace and comfort with Him. What is one way to get tht? Verse 1 of Psalm 131 says, "My heart is not proud, O LORD, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me."

To me, this means that God wants us to be like children -- not worrying about everything and anybody. God the Father desires us to draw close to His heart -- with complete reliance

June 12, 2006:

The group going on the mission/service trip to Harlan, Kentucky this week wrote a covenant how they were going to act on the trip. We wrote these actions on an orange piece of fabric. Some of the behaviors we agreed to live into include:

1) Loving each other -- being patient, kind, and respectful.

2) Making a difference with our work in this needy area

and

3) Not complaining or grumbling, but serve and speak as Jesus would

As I think about the guides . . . I am struck by how relevant they are to the guides God gave to us through Hebrews 13 last Sunday. How are you loving others? How are you caring for the hurting and broken? How are you living into sexual boundaries while also being free of the love of money? And don't forget -- God will never leave you or forsake you! And you can say with confidence -- the LORD is my helper!

June 5, 2006:

I began this week that we as a church are fasting for our finances and future, by reading Hebrews 13:6. It reads, "So we can say, with confidence, the LORD is my helper; I will not be afraid."

What a wonderful word from God!! He says that I can say with confidence that He will help! God says that I (we) do not have to be afraid! God's word to me and I believe to us as a church is that as we seek Him through fasting, prayer, study of scripture, listening, etc. -- that He will help us. He will help us with our finances, our future, our witness, our unity, our worship, etc. The LORD says to us, "Do not be afraid."

I wrote this verse on a 3" by 5" card to carry with me this week. I wanted God's word to be close -- to be living and active in me -- so His will can be done. How is God speaking to you?

May 30, 2006:

As part of my Memorial weekend holiday, I went hiking by myself on a trial that I have been on several times in the past ten years. It was good to revisit this path and hear God's word through nature.

As I walked, I was reminded of the various people and different circumstances on which I had hiked this trail before. I was reminded that like a healthy faith walk with Jesus -- this path is not hugely popular. I was reminded that despite our best efforts -- there is always a myriad of temptations and distractions along the way. I was reminded that the top of the mountain is one goal -- not THE goal. (The process of getting to and from the mountain is important too!) I was reminded that Jesus has no intention for us to live indefinitely "on the mountain" (see Matt. 17:1-9).

Lastly, I sensed God reminding me that through it all . . . He is good. He loves and treasures all people. And He is with us -- even to the end of the earth!

May 22, 2006:

Early this week, as I attempted to get going on what I needed to do -- I was waylaid by a malfunctioning dryer. Ever have good intentions and tightly-timed plans adjusted by less than positive circumstances?

After dismantling a good portion of the dryer, cleaning it up, and putting it back together -- I was excited to finish drying the laundry. GUESS WHAT? Same problem.

Running out of time to mess with the dryer, I felt myself getting distracted by worry and anger. Yes, I knew that I needed to attend to the problem, but I also knew God the Father was drawing me to Himself--

To abide with Him.

To listen to Him.

To obey Him --

even as the dryer banged, knocked, and sputtered in the background.

I was and am committed to living into what Jesus says in Matthew 6. "Do not worry. . . your Heavenly Father knows what you need. . . seek first His kingdom and righteousness and all these things will given as well."

May 15, 2006:

Have you ever said, "I wish I had more faith?" Have you ever desired to more deeply understand Jesus and His ways? Romans 10:17 can be translated, "Faith comes from hearing the word of God."

Last Sunday, we discussed "word of God" as including Bible study, but also as God speaking through prayer, the church, or creation. We named that hearing God's word is not just hearing the Bible, it is knowing and hearing the One whom the Bible reveals (Jesus).

Friend, how have you heard God's word this week? Where have you attempted to increase you faith? How are you growing in knowing Jesus?

May 8, 2006:

At "Youth Sunday" this past week, I enjoyed the bright banner brought in by the youth group. It had pretty flowers and Isaiah 40:8 printed in Hebrew on it. Translated it reads, "The grass withers, the flowers fade, but the word of our God will stand forever". An alternate reading of this verse's ending could be, ". . . the word of God is always fulfilled."

Some questions for you today --

What is "word of God" to you?

What have you heard from God?

What do you know that God is going to fulfill?

Now we know that difficulties in life "wither" or "fades" our faith and hopes. We know storms, droughts, and famines dampen a positive perspective. How can we remain faithful and strong to God and His word?

I love Psalm 119 and especially verse 16 -- "I will not neglect your word." Friends, let us not neglect God's word -- whether written, (The Bible) whether spoken to us by the Spirit through prayer, or through the church -- which God has ordained.

May 2, 2006:

Last Sunday, Pastor Naomi and I were gone from AMC -- sharing in the double ordination of Mark and Stephanie Bartsch at Toledo Mennonite Church. After returning, I listened to the recording of our AMC worship service. I was deeply moved and blessed.

The leadership, communication, sharing, children's story, worship, prayer, and scripture reading, etc. was rich, "real", and relevant.

Well done AMC!

I am proud of how we are "continuing to live in Christ -- being rooted and built up in him -- being strengthened in the faith as you were taught and overflowing with thankfulness" (Colossians 2:6-7). I am proud of how we are getting healthy as a church. Let us not give up! Let us continue seeking God and His Kingdom and righteousness first. Let us trust our Master and look to His promise of provision and guidance.

Pastor Jess

April 25, 2006:

As I finished my "prayer walk" this week around the church, I decided to pick up the trash, etc. that littered the area. As I walked the final lap with a trash bag, picking up the litter I noticed a couple of things:

1) When we have to stop and pick up trash (whether ours or someone else's) it slows down the walk.

2) As we walk with trash (whether ours and/or someone else's) we get tired more quickly -- especially as the bag gets fuller!

3) When the bag is full -- we need to get it to the dumpster -- so we can get relief and so we don't make more of a mess.

Is there a correlation to our faith walk as Christians? Does trash slow you down? Where do you put the "trash" you carry? Do you carry it indefinitely until the bag bursts -- making another mess? Or do you put it where it needs to be . . . like at the cross of Jesus?!?

April 18, 2006:

Easter is a time of "new life". Where do you see new life? How is God teaching you about resurrection and life over death? What are you doing that contributes to new beginnings and new hope?

The Engle family is experiencing new life through our puppy, "Rocket". He is a bundle of energy and love. We enjoy watching him romp around the yard or wrestle with his stuffed rabbit. We love snuggling him on our lap or seeing him nap in the paper box.

We also are learning about patience and discipline. We must be patient as Rocket learns his name, a few important commands, and when and where to release his bladder.

These things and others do correlate with living into the new life Jesus has for us. Come and let us learn together.

April 10, 2006:

Jesus wasn't just a good teacher, healer or "good guy". He wasn't just a prophet, martyr, or founder of a new religion. Jesus Christ is the Son of God who humbled himself and died on a cross so a bridge could be built between sinful humans (us) and a loving Heavenly Father. The fact that Jesus arose from the grave, conquering death -- proves and secures this truth.

Jesus knows that all of us have issues, struggles, and problems. He knew we needed a loving Heavenly Father to help us with our lives. His death and resurrection help us experience new life, forgiveness, and true love.

Friend, reach your hand to the extended hand of Jesus. Allow him to help you in your life.

April 4, 2006:

On the Sunday before Easter (or "Resurrection Day"), many churches celebrate "Palm Sunday". Palm Sunday marks Jesus' final entry into Jerusalem. It was a time of joyful celebration, of the spreading of cut branches on the road Jesus traveled in on, and of shouts of "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD!" Another name for this is, "The Triumphal Entry."

This day is also called "Passion Sunday" because it points to the suffering and death Jesus will experience later in the week. May you gain more meaning and insight about Jesus this week as you take time to pray, to hear God's word through personal reflection, and/or through participating in worship service that include music, communion, foot washing, readings of God's word, and prayer.

March 27, 2006:

As I look ahead a couple of weeks to Easter Sunday (or "Resurrection Day" as some like to say) the song, "Old Rugged Cross" has come to mind. Without the cross, there is no resurrection. Without Jesus' shed blood there is no salvation. Without Christ's suffering there is no hope of that "home far away".

But because Jesus was willing to face and endure profound aloneness, abandonment, beatings, mockery and agonizing death on the cross -- we are presented with the way to experience God's salvation. Because of the old rugged cross, we can know that God is good, He loves and treasures us. Because of Jesus' death and resurrection, we can look forward to sharing an eternal home with Him!

My daughter, Anna, writes devotionals with a practical application every so often and then sends them via e-mail to a variety of people. Here is an excerpt of one from last week.

"Last year, low-carb diets like Atkins were all the fad. As a vegetarian who eats whole grains and knows their nutritional benefits, I was very wary of this fad and it angered me when people said bread was 'unhealthy'. But more important than what you eat for food is your spiritual life. Don't go low-carb on the bread of life.

In John 6:35, Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty." The 100% whole wheat bread I make myself is healthy and filling and everything, but I still need 3 meals a day, everyday. In this scripture, Jesus tells us that we don't have to keep searching spiritually. We can find the truth and stick to it! We can come to Jesus, and we won't hunger spiritually. We can believe Jesus and not thirst for truth, for we will have found it."

March 13, 2006

After I returned from a run this week, I needed to spend time cleaning off mud from my shoes, clothes, etc. Rather than just focusing on the mud and mess, I reminded myself of other parts of the run -- the birds chirping, the pleasant wind blowing, and the flowing water in the creeks from spring rain.

In our walks (or runs) with God this week -- there will be plenty of mud and messes. We can be distracted and/or preoccupied with that or we can look around seeing what God is doing. Are you going to allow a little mud on your shoes to keep you from running God's race? Are you going to be the type of Christian that when things get messy -- you ignore or deny God's plan of following Jesus?

Friends, choose with me to follow Jesus steadily, through the mud and messes -- so when "THE day" comes Jesus will say to you, "Well done."

March 6, 2006

As I was jogging and savoring time outside, I again experienced God speaking through the birds and nature. I continue to hear God through the birds saying, "Do not worry, I will take care of you. Do not worry." (See Matthew 6:25-34)

Secondly, I heard through the birds, "Spring is coming. Spring is coming." Yes, we know that Winter will eventually end and Spring will come with its buds, flowers, and green. But Spring is also coming to AMC! New life, new hope, new growth, and freshness. Let us look closely and savor the signs of Spring! Be on the lookout for "buds of new life" in our midst. Notice the "flowers", the beauty of people walking together. Savor the freshness of worship and wonder as we see God's creative hand at work.

Last Sunday, Curtis Marazzi related an interaction with God while viewing an impressive sunset. He heard the LORD say, "I did that." As I have been out and about this week I too have allowed and heard the LORD say, "I did that."

While walking in beautiful snow, God said, "I did that." When thinking of people making turnarounds in their lives, God said, "I did that." When observing provision to the birds, God said, "I did that." When noticing God's hand of healing, God said, "I did that."

Where have you seen God at work this pas week? Where and when can you allow God to say to you, "I did that."?

Pastor Jess

"What do you think the birds are saying?" I contemplated this the other morning as I was out walking. The sun was out, the blue sky was far-reaching, and the birds were chirping. What were they saying?

Eventually, I heard the birds echoing Jesus' words in Matthew 6:25-34. "Do not worry, do not worry." "God does take care of us -- God does take care of us." "You can trust our Creator -- He loves us. He values us. And you are human -- how much more does He value you!!" "Do not worry, do not worry."

February 13, 2006

Jesus was impressed with the widow's offering in Mark 12:41-44 -- so much so that he called his disciples together and emphasized it!

I believe the amount of money was not the real issue -- instead Jesus was struck by her faith. This women believed that her Father in Heaven loved, treasured, and valued her and would take care of her needs. She recognized that all that she had was God's anyway and so she could give it back freely, generously, and joyfully!

How can we have and nurture a faith like this? It begins by believing and embracing that God the Father really loves, treasures, and values us.

It involves humbling ourselves, naming that it is through the gift of the Jesus Christ that we are saved and helped. And it includes following Jesus -- learning about a relationship with God through prayer, study of God's word, accountable relationships with other believers, and experiences with God surprising us with how He can and does help us.

Receive and "nurture" your faith.

February 6, 2006

Last Sunday, Jesus' words, "Quiet! Be still!" or "Peace! Be still!" silenced a raging storm for the disciples (see Mark 4:39-41). The disciples were awed at the power and influence of Jesus' words.

This morning there was a "storm raging" in my mind and emotions. As each gust of wind blew and each wave crashed against me, I found myself despairing and growing more fearful. Then the words of Jesus came to mind, "Peace! Be still!" and "Quiet! Be still!" As the winds and waves of life came at me, I said the words of Jesus to myself and my storm, "Peace! Be still!" "Quiet! Be still!" I remembered and quoted Psalm 46:10, "Be still and know that I am God" -- while specifically naming the worry and concern that was going through my mind.

We can face storms with faith in Jesus and His words. His example of speaking to the storms is relevant to us. Follow in Jesus' footsteps and you will overcome!

February 1, 2006

As I was driving back from Virginia this past weekend, I was mulling over the phrase Samuel said when God called to him (see I Samuel 3:10). "speak, for your servant is listening." As I was driving I prayed this too, "Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening."

After a time of driving and looking at the Blue Ridge Mountains, the "still small voice" said, "What do you see?" I answered, "Big, beautiful mountains. . . created and sustained by you." God's voice responded, "What do you hear?" I said, "I hear that you are BIG. You are a mighty and powerful God that should never be underestimated. You create, sustain, and love."

Friends, draw near to God and He will draw near to you. He loves and treasures relationship with us. He delights to help us with our lives.

January 23, 2006

As a church we continue asking the question, "What WOULD Jesus do?" Last Sunday, we talked about Jesus walking with God. How are you walking with God? Are you adjusting your pace? Are you working through obstacles? Are you noticing blessings?

When we walk with God, hope increases. Our ability to wait on God, to have joy, and to find rest increase. As I read Psalms, I notice the author wrestling with real life issues. Sometimes they express deep negative emotion. Other times they communicate clear faith and hope statements. Notice Psalms 55,56,57,59,61,63,64,69,71,77, and 78. As you read and think about these Psalms, recognize that you are walking with God.

January 17, 2006

How often do you hear or read something and think, "Boy, I sure wish "so and so" would hear or see that"? I am guilty of this too.

This week I was cleaning up the kitchen when I noticed some fairly big food scraps stuck in the dishwasher drain. As I removed the pieces, I was thinking, "I need to make sure I show the kids these scraps -- they need to know that we've got to rinse the dishes in the sink before we put them in the dishwasher."

Then I heard that still small voice, "Jess, this is for you." I realized I was the one that needed the reminder -- not the kids! Friends, when we hear or read a message that seems to fit another person perfectly -- stop. Begin with yourself and your relationship with God. Are you doing what you are supposed to? Or are you gazing into another person's business while neglecting your own? God the Father wants us to attend to our business first! How are you doing? Are you acting justly? Are you loving mercy? Are you walking humbly with your God?

January 9, 2006

Last Sunday, before taking communion, we were invited to write down on paper what problems, worries, or pains that we have (or will have) that we wanted God's help with. We were then invited to offer them to God by laying them in a big basket. We then took communion, putting faith in God who through Jesus' broken body and shed blood helps us overcome the sins and struggles of life.

What did you lay before God? Have you taken it back? Do you trust that God can handle it? Is there more that you are carrying that Abba is telling is telling you to let go of?

In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest." Jesus invites us to come to Him and He will help us. Can you take Jesus at His word? Can you believe that Jesus saves, helps, and gives rest?

January 4, 2006

Psalm 116:3-4 reads, "The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came upon me; I was overcome by trouble and sorrow. Then I called on the name of the LORD: "O LORD, save me!"

Verse 6 says the LORD protects the simplehearted. (I think that means the normal, average, commonplace person -- like us.)

Verse 6 continues "when I was in great need, He (the LORD) saved me." And then I love verse 7 too. "Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the LORD has been (and will be) good to you."

We will have trouble and pains and the LORD will help and save us. How will you allow the LORD to help you be at rest today, this month, and this year? Will you call for help? Will you lay down a specific list of anxieties, pains, and problems as you come to the communion table today? Can you know that Jesus was sent by God to love and save you -- not to condemn you?
